James Vowles claims Logan Sargeant 'at risk' of losing Williams seat amidst Kimi Antonelli rumors
Peter Casey-USA TODAY Sports

Logan Sargeant has had a difficult start to the 2024 season. The American driver’s future in F1 remains uncertain. Sargeant had crashed the Williams’ FW46 chassis on a couple of occasions this year. Hence, the 23-year-old is constantly at risk of being replaced by the prodigy Andrea Kimi Antonelli in the coming season.

Logan Sargeant has failed to perform good results while Alex Albon has already signed a multi-year deal with the Grove-based team. Hence, Team Principal James Vowles didn’t hesitate to point out the fact that the 23-year-old was ‘at risk’ for the coming season. According to Vowles, this was a ‘simple matter of fact’ as the team required better performances to continue with the American driver.

But the simple matter of facts are, what I’ve already explained, is that he is at risk. That’s a simple matter of fact behind it. James Vowles, said as reported by racefans.net.

Additionally, the team principal reckoned that Sargeant needed to perform above his current standards. Vowles highlighted that having a seat in the team was a matter of ‘meritocracy’ and hence the 23-year-old needed to prove his worth. The Briton added that Williams was already in talks with multiple other drivers to drive for the coming season. Mercedes reportedly has made a special request for Andrea Kimi Antonelli to make his F1 debut before he turned 18. Many believe that this would allow Williams to replace Sargeant with the Italian driver this season.

He has to perform above where he is. This is meritocracy. I’m helping him on that journey. I want him to be successful. But in the meantime, we are talking to a few other drivers because we have to get our ’25, ’26, ’27 line-up correct. James Vowles added.

James Vowles ‘ready to work’ with Logan Sargeant for contract extension

Logan Sargeant had been unfortunate since the season started as he was sidetracked during the Japanese GP. The American driver needs to score some consistent results to be even considered for a seat next year. James Vowles claimed that he believed in having a ‘humane conversation’ over the issues that the 23-year-old was facing. Additionally, the Briton was ready to work with Sargeant to help him improve his performance.

I believe in having a human conversation and a human conversation is: This is where you are, this is where you need to be, and I’ll work with you as much as possible but you’re in control of that destiny, not myself. James Vowles noted.

Apart from this, Vowles claimed that he informed Sargeant that there was a way for him to secure a contract extension. The American driver is the only one capable of dictating his future in Formula 1. A few bad races in the 2024 season doesn’t mean that Williams would oust the 23-year-old from the team.

I explained to him the controls are within his hands and there is absolutely things he can be doing in order to create an environment for him where he continues within Formula 1, It’s not the decision’s done. It’s not the door shut. That’s the whole point. James Vowles concluded.

Hence, Logan Sargeant still has a chance to continue in Formula 1 despite a woeful season start. The British team has provided the 23-year-old with the best opportunities possible. All that’s left for Sargeant is to pick up the pace and finally score some points down the season. However, it remains to be seen if James Vowles and Williams run out of patience in the coming weeks.
